Cozen O’Connor’s lawyer Anna Wermuth named one of the 50 best women in law

Anna Wermuth, Cozen O’Connor’s National Department of Labor and Employment Vice-Chair, has been nominated for the second edition of Salute! Top 50 Women in Law Award from the editors of the Chicago Daily Law Bulletin and Chicago Lawyer Magazine.

The 50 winners – selected from over 500 Hi! nominations – were recently announced during a live webinar. The award recognizes the most influential women in Chicago’s legal community for their work in advancing other women in the profession, for their success in the field of law, and for serving as shining examples of leadership.

Wermuth has been instrumental in the growth of Cozen O’Connor’s national labor and employment practice in his role as vice chair of the firm’s labor and employment department. Based in Cozen O’Connor’s Chicago office, she represents management in high-stakes labor and employment litigation, including more recently securing a Seventh Circuit precedent-setting decision in a class action case by the FLSA.

Over the past decade, Wermuth has also become a go-to legal resource for the higher education industry, representing colleges and universities in litigation with faculty, staff, and students, as well as in efforts to organization and collective bargaining on campus.

In May 2021, Wermuth was appointed to the seven-member advisory committee to study the rules of court and internal operating procedures of district and bankruptcy courts in the Northern District of Illinois. Also in 2021, she was appointed Employer Vice-Chair of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee of the Labor and Employment Section of the American Bar Association on the Legal Profession Committee. She is also the co-vice-president of management for the section’s national moot court competition.

Wermuth has held numerous leadership positions within the ABA, including most recently as co-chair of the Law Development Directorate under the NLRA Committee. She was also associate editor of Developing Labor Law – the main traditional labor law treaty published jointly by Bloomberg / BNA and the ABA. Additionally, Wermuth is the past chair of the Chicago Bar Association’s Labor and Employment Law Committee.

In 2020, Wermuth was appointed a fellow of the College of Labor and Employment Lawyers (CLEL). She has also been honored in three of the past four years by Crain’s Chicago Business: in 2017, she was named to Chicago’s inaugural list of ‘Most Influential Lawyers’ and in 2018 and 2020 she was included on the Chicago’s “most influential jurists” list. Prior to entering private practice, Wermuth served as law clerk to the Honorable Rebecca R. Pallmeyer, Chief Justice of the District Court for the Northern District of Illinois.

Wermuth received her JD (1999) from Loyola University Chicago School of Law, where she received her second degree in her class. She received a Masters (1992) from Northwestern University and graduated with Distinction from DePaul University (BA, 1991) where she also competed in NCAA Division I Women’s Track and Field and Cross- country.

In addition to his legal practice, Wermuth sits on the board of directors of the Chicago Youth Centers, a 60-year-old nonprofit organization that provides services to more than 4,000 children and families in Chicago each year with the education of the early childhood, outside of leadership programs for schools and adolescents.
